Mac and cheese is a classic comfort food—creamy, cheesy, and utterly satisfying. You can make it quickly on the stovetop for a weeknight dinner or bake it to get that golden, crispy topping for special occasions.

Ingredients

For the Pasta:

2 cups elbow macaroni (or any pasta of your choice)

4 cups water

1 tsp salt

For the cheese Sauce:

2 tbsp butter

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

2 cups milk (whole or 2%)

1 tsp mustard powder (optional, for a slight tang)

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp paprika (optional)

2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar is classic; you can mix cheddar and mozzarella for extra gooeyness)

Salt to taste

For the Baked Version (Topping):

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

2 tbsp butter, melted

1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

Stovetop Mac and cheese Instructions

Cook the Pasta:

Boil water with salt in a large pot. Add macaroni and cook until al dente (usually 7–8 minutes). Drain and set aside.

Make the cheese Sauce:

In the same pot, melt butter over medium heat.

Add flour and whisk continuously for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.

Slowly add milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Cook until slightly thickened (5–6 minutes).

Add mustard powder, pepper, paprika, and salt. Stir well.

Add shredded cheese gradually, stirring until smooth and creamy.

Combine pasta and Sauce:

Add cooked pasta to the cheese sauce and mix until all pasta is coated.

Serve hot immediately for a creamy stovetop mac and cheese.

Baked Mac and cheese Instructions

Preheat Oven:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the pasta and Sauce:

Follow the stovetop instructions up to combining pasta with the cheese sauce.

Transfer to Baking Dish:

Pour mac and cheese into a greased baking dish.

Add Topping:

Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the mac and cheese.

Sprinkle grated parmesan on top.

Bake:

Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Optional: Broil for 2–3 minutes for an extra crispy crust.

Serve:

Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy the gooey, cheesy goodness!

Tips for Perfect Mac and Cheese:

Use sharp cheddar for a stronger cheese flavor.

For extra creaminess, add 1/4 cup cream cheese to the sauce.

Mix different cheeses like Gruyere, mozzarella, or Monterey Jack for depth.

For a crunchy twist, add crushed cornflakes to the topping instead of breadcrumbs.
