On saturday and sunday, assam Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took part in four separate events in which confiscated contraband worth over Rs 163 crore was burned to send a message of zero tolerance for illicit substances.
The incidents in central Assam's Diphu, Golaghat, Barhampur, and Hajoi were part of the new bharatiya janata party (BJP) government's ongoing fight against illicit drugs trafficking since it came to office in May.
“Illicit drug trafficking is a pandemic, and those who engage in it should be prosecuted harshly. It hurts youngsters, ruins families, and causes a slew of other societal ills,” Sarma stated at one of the gatherings on sunday in Barhampur.

Between May 10 and July 15, state police reported 874 cases under the Narcotic drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, arresting 1,493 drug traffickers across the state. More than 27 kilogrammes of heroin, 12,823 kilogrammes of marijuana, 41 kilogrammes of opium, 78,000 bottles of cough syrup, 1.3 million psychotropic pills, and 3 kilogrammes of morphine were discovered. Three kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, three thousand kilogrammes of poppy straw, and $1.80 million in cash were seized.

According to Assam's chief minister, Himanta Biswanath Sarma, the illegal drug trade in the state is worth about 5,000 crores per year. He has ordered cops to be as tough on drug traffickers as possible while adhering to the law. police operations against drug traffickers have been criticised by opposition parties for being too harsh. According to the CM, the officers have been told to deal with the drug dealer harshly.
