In a sweeping overhaul of examination protocols, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced heightened security measures and expanded infrastructure for NEET UG 2024, exactly one year after the infamous paper leak scandal that rocked the nation in 2023.

This year, the number of test centres has been increased by over 700, bringing the total to nearly 5,000 across India. The move is aimed at reducing overcrowding, streamlining logistics, and curbing potential malpractices.

In addition to the expanded network of centres, the NTA, in coordination with local law enforcement, has introduced police escorts for question paper consignments. Sealed packets of exam papers are now being transported under tight security from regional printing hubs to examination venues. Officers are tasked with monitoring the movement of materials right up to the start of the exam, ensuring there is no room for tampering or unauthorized access.

“These are unprecedented but necessary steps,” said an NTA official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “After the incident last year, public trust had to be restored. This year’s measures reflect a zero-tolerance policy on leaks and malpractice.”

The 2023 paper leak, which led to massive outrage and widespread protests by students and parents, had triggered investigations across multiple states and resulted in several arrests. The breach prompted a government directive to the NTA to revamp its security and administrative protocols.

In addition to physical security, the agency has also implemented a new wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital tracking system. Each question paper packet is tagged with a unique QR code and time-stamped seal, making it easier to trace the exact journey of the materials.

Meanwhile, students and parents have welcomed the changes but remain cautiously optimistic. “We appreciate the effort, but until the exam goes off without a glitch, the anxiety will remain,” said Aditi Sharma, a NEET aspirant from Lucknow.

NEET UG 2024 is scheduled for May 5, and with nearly 24 lakh candidates registered, it stands as one of the largest competitive examinations in the world. All eyes are now on the NTA to deliver a secure, transparent, and incident-free test — a critical milestone in regaining public confidence.
