In a compact space, the movie begins. When Gareth (Ritch, who is also performing triple duty) first arrives, he thinks he is being interviewed for a grant he applied for, but Deena (Sinda Nichols) and Amos (David Girard) quickly make their actual intentions known. Deena and Amos mistakenly think Gareth is a child predator who preys online, but they soon discover that he is actually the man behind Cherry (Tatum Matthews), an AI that he built to track down predators. The movie then follows the three of them throughout the years as they use Cherry and consider the morally murky issues surrounding its use, particularly in light of the AI's advancements.

Given that the majority of the movie takes place in one room, it's amazing that The Artifice girl manages to keep the tension high. The actors do a terrific job reacting to one another, using certain ticks and other types of body language and tone to keep the tension as the mystery surrounding their meeting is revealed in the first act, which is extremely intense. The plot develops like a polished stage play, constrained by its setting but supported by its laser-focused and generally incisive writing. You'll never get tired of watching it, and the discussions—which are primarily of an ethical nature—are especially wise given the surge in the use of AI.

Characters in Ritch's script are morally nuanced. There are numerous layers that scream to be removed. As the movie goes on, we learn fresh details and previously unknown information that helps to bridge the gap between us and the artificially intelligent girl who is subject to the whims of her creator. The Artifice girl engages in discussions on consciousness, what it means to have emotions and to act on them, the inherent biases that humans who created AI ultimately programmed into them, and whether the ends justify the means for such cutting-edge technology that treads a morally precarious line.

The final act of The Artifice girl drags a little bit because it hangs on to one of the film's key questions for too long, but overall, the movie is fantastic. Great character work, fascinating, multi-layered debates, and tension that never relents are all present. Ritch is dealing with a winner. The Artifice girl offers a deep, nuanced investigation of the future and AI's role in it, including what technology can do for us and the terrible, sometimes unresolved ethical ambiguity it brings. It manages to be both engrossing and intense.
