My father even sold his college textbooks to raise money to come to Mumbai.

Ajit worked as an 'extra' in many films at the beginning of his career. Then gradually he started getting films. Initially, his real name Hamid Khan was given credit in films, but he was not successful. Then on the advice of director Nana Bhai Bhatt, he changed his name to Ajit.
