Election Flashbacks that made a mark in history!

As the country's sixteenth presidential election is underway, let's take a look back at some of the interesting events that took place in the previous elections.

The sixteenth presidential election of the country is being held today. Former jharkhand Governor Tirelapathi Murmu is contesting on behalf of the BJP-led national democratic alliance and former Union minister Yashwant Sinha is contesting as a general candidate on behalf of the opposition parties. MPs of parliament and MLAs in the state are going to vote in this election. The candidate who secures more than 50 percent of the total votes worth more than 10 lakh will win. The votes cast in today's election will be counted on July 21. The winning candidate will take over as the country's fifteenth President on July 25.

15 elections have been held before this election. Some of the interesting events that took place among them were:

1. On january 26, 1950, after india became a Republic, Dr. rajendra prasad took charge as the Interim President on the same day. After this, in 1952, he contested the presidential election for the first time. 3 independents contested against him. In this election and in 1957, Dr. rajendra prasad won two consecutive terms and became the President. He is the only President of india who has served two terms.

2. Nowadays you have seen that only two candidates are in the fray in the presidential elections. But that was not the case in the early days. Since 1952, 4 candidates have contested the presidential election. In 1967 elections, the maximum number of candidates was 17. 15 of them are independents. Similarly, 15 people contested the presidential election in 1969. There was no restriction on independents contesting that day. So, many jumped into the polls. Chaudhry Hariram in particular contested four consecutive presidential elections as an independent from 1952 to 1967 and lost.

3. election of the President should be held only once in five years. But, after the presidential election was held in 1967, the election came again in 1969 itself. After the death of Zakir Hussain, the election came within a year and a half. Similarly, after the presidential election in 1974, another election was held in 1977. After the death of Bakruddin ali Ahmed, the election came in 3 years. These are the only people who passed away while holding the office of President.

4. New rules were introduced in the 1974 election to prevent independents from contesting the presidential election and to prevent independents from contesting the case. Accordingly, the rule was changed that 10 MPs and MLAs should propose the contesting candidate and 10 people should recommend it. Also the deposit was increased to Rs.2500. An amendment to the law was brought to ensure that only the supreme court can hear the case against the results of the presidential election in the High Courts.

5. In the 1969 elections, congress leader neelam sanjiva reddy was announced as a candidate. However, prime minister Indira gandhi opposed the candidate announced by the party V.V. He made Kiri to play independently. The 1969 election was the only election in history without a shortage of excitement.
