
Balwant Singh Rajoana, who was on hunger strike in patiala Jail of punjab, has ended his hunger strike on
Friday. Rajoana had started a hunger strike from december 5. Balwant Singh Rajoana has been sentenced to
death for the murder of former cm Beant Singh. An emergency meeting of five Singh Sahibs was called on
behalf of Sri Akal Takht Sahib regarding Rajoana sitting on hunger strike. On behalf of Shiromani Gurdwara
Management Committee President harjinder singh Dhami, an appeal was made to Rajoana to end his hunger
strike. A high level delegation led by Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Raghbir Singh met Balwant Singh
Rajoana. After this meeting, Rajoana was given water brought from the golden temple to drink and his hunger
strike was ended. Balwant Singh Rajoana is lodged in patiala jail. Efforts were being made for three days to end
his hunger strike.
Did Giani Raghbir Singh ask for an appointment?
Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Raghbir Singh had sought an appointment from the jail department to
meet Balwant Singh Rajoana. After this, after getting permission from the jail department, Giani Raghbir Singh,
SGPC President harjinder singh Dhami and Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib Giani sultan Singh met
Balwant Singh Rajoana on friday morning. Only after this meeting Rajoana agreed to end the strike.
Why was Rajoana on hunger strike?
On 31 august 1995, punjab chief minister Beant Singh was assassinated. The human bomb had detonated itself
near Beant Singh's car. Balwant Singh Rajoana has been sentenced to death in this murder case. In 2012,
Balwant Singh Rajoana had sent a mercy petition to the President to convert his death sentence to life
imprisonment. But, no decision has been taken yet on the petition. Angered by this, Rajoana had demanded
SGPC and Shiromani Akali Dal to withdraw this petition by december 5. When this did not happen till
december 5, Balwant Singh Rajoana went on a hunger strike.
