Reportedly the central government has informed that there is no toll booth in tamil Nadu which is against the rules of the National Highways Authority of India. The Winter Session of parliament is underway. In this, departmental ministers are answering the questions of the members. Union minister Nitin Gadkari has responded to a question raised by Villupuram mp ravikumar that there is no tollbooth in tamil Nadu that is against the rules of the National Highways Authority of India. “What are the details and number of toll booths in tamil Nadu that violate the provisions of the National Highway Toll (Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 that there should not be two toll booths within a distance of 60 km?; What are the steps taken by NHAI to close such illegal toll booths in tamil Nadu?; Is the Morathandi tollbooth on the Puducherry-Tindivanam highway violating the above rule? , if so, what are its details?; In 2019, the toll plaza was declared illegal by the Wannur Munsiff court and an interim stay was obtained by the NHAI in the madras high court on the ground that the contractor would suffer financial loss?; If so, what are the details of the action taken by the government to close the toll plaza?” ravikumar mp raised these questions in Parliament.
Union Highways minister Nitin Gadkari has responded to that. It said, “National Highways (NHAI) Toll Rules – 2008 states that there should be 60 km between two toll booths. If there is a need to establish another toll booth on the same stretch of the National Highway, it is mandatory to record the reasons for the same. While setting up a toll booth in a particular area, various aspects such as the distance between other toll booths and the financial burden on the road users are taken into consideration.
The approval of the appropriate authority is obtained for the establishment of each customs post. Therefore, none of the NHAI toll plazas in tamil Nadu have violated the National Highway Toll Rules. Moradanti Toll booth is established as per NHAI toll rules mentioned above. The madras high court granted an interim stay on the order of the Vanur Munsiff court dated 08.02.2019. Thereafter the case was dismissed on 14.12.2021.” This is stated in the reply.
