‘I’m Not A Politician’: Rahul Evokes Nehru, mahatma Gandhi; Claims ‘Modi Bowed Down To Trump’ In US
Rahul gandhi asserts his commitment to truth, distancing himself from conventional politics. He criticizes PM Modi's foreign policy and invokes the legacies of jawaharlal nehru and mahatma Gandhi.
Congress leader rahul gandhi has once again distanced himself from conventional politics, asserting that he is a “truth-seeker” and not a politician, as he invoked the legacies of jawaharlal nehru and mahatma gandhi while launching a scathing critique of prime minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy gestures—particularly the PM’s embrace of former US President donald trump during a wide-ranging conversation with senior congress leader sandeep Dikshit.
The interaction, shared on Congress’s social media handles, saw rahul gandhi reflect on truth, tradition, leadership, and the issues he sees confronting the country today.
Positioning himself as a torchbearer of his family’s tradition of truth in politics, rahul said, “There was no political Nehru. There was no political Indira Gandhi. They did not view themselves as politicians. This idea that is very deep in my family is that politics is actually about truth.” He added, “I will take the hit. I am happy to take the hit. But I am not going to veer off from the truth because you want me to.”
On leadership, rahul said, “Whether I’m speaking to bill gates or Chetram Mochi, I meet them with the same curiosity. Because real leadership isn’t about control, it’s about compassion. And in today’s India, where truth is inconvenient, I’ve made my choice. I’ll stand for it. No matter the cost.”
Citing Nehru, he remarked, “It's compassion. I'm not interested in who you are - I'm interested in what you're feeling. I don't care whether you're a billionaire, a poor person, or whoever you are. That curiosity is unbounded. That's why I reacted to the term "politician." I'm not a politician, and I refuse to be boxed into this structure that someone just makes up and says: "I'm a politician," or "I'm a businessman," or "I'm an academic." These are just labels. I don't buy them.”
He further stressed that his commitment to truth was unaffected by public perception. “I am not incentivized by what you will think of me 20 years from today or 30 years from today,” he said, describing mahatma gandhi as a guide in the indian tradition—“sort of in the indian tradition as the Guru, as the guide.”
Rahul gandhi Slams Modi’s ‘Hugplomacy’, Says PM ‘Bowed His Head’ In Front Of Trump
“Modi’s hugging trump is not going to resolve it. He bowed down his head and came back. mahatma gandhi, jawaharlal nehru, and indira gandhi would not have done that,” said the leader of the Opposition in the lok sabha about PM Modi's US visit.
He remarked that india is currently unwilling to confront harsh realities. “India is not ready to face the truth now. You are going to have to develop the courage to face the truth. There is huge unemployment, your entire economic system has failed. You have a complete lack of harmony in the country,” he said, warning of serious consequences of the US-imposed tariffs and suggesting the Modi government’s responses have been ineffective.
Rahul gandhi Mounts Attack On RSS, Compares Present-Day india To british Raj
Rahul also criticized the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stating that it is attacking the core values embedded in the Constitution. “The ideas in our Constitution are 3,000 years old. What is under attack is not just a book. Rather, a set of philosophies that are inconvenient to the RSS,” he said, linking this ideological attack to the assassination of mahatma Gandhi.
Touching upon the current economic and political scenario, rahul compared it to british colonial rule. “There was a partnership between the british and the Maharajas and their bureaucracies and armies. The indian people were completely squeezed in some ways similar to what’s going on today with Adani, Ambani, and stuff,” he said, opining that, unlike the freedom struggle era, there is a visible lack of courage among the people and leadership today.
Rahul gandhi Recalls How Indira Spoke Of Nehru
He recalled how his grandmother Indira Gandhi would speak of Nehru with great affection, referring to him as “Papa” and sharing anecdotes of his love for the mountains. “We were in kashmir once and she said, oh you know he almost died, he fell into a glacier (much before he became Prime Minister). That story I remember,” he said.
Praising the legacy of India’s freedom fighters, rahul remarked, “Gandhi stood up to an empire with nothing but truth. Nehru gave indians the courage to resist oppression and ultimately claim freedom. Any great human endeavor—science, art, resistance—all begins with confronting fear. And if you’re committed to non-violence, then truth is your only weapon. No matter what was done to them, they didn’t budge from it. That’s what made them great leaders.”
