The Center has decided to conduct caste census. Whatever may be the motive behind this, but karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah has mentioned the bihar connection behind it. Siddaramaiah's statement on thursday (May 01, 2025) has increased the uneasiness of BJP. Siddaramaiah said that the Center has also taken this decision due to the pressure created by the Congress, especially the former president of the party.
'The haste with which the caste census…'
Siddaramaiah said, "The haste with which the BJP-led central government took the decision about the caste census on wednesday convinced me that it has been done in view of the bihar assembly elections." The chief minister said that the 50 percent limit on reservation should be relaxed. He said that the socio-economic and educational status of SC/ST, OBC and minorities should be analyzed and reservation should be given to them accordingly.
According to Siddaramaiah, the decision to fix the 50 per cent cap was given in the indra Sawhney case in 1992. He said that while hearing the Mandal Commission, the supreme court bench had fixed the cap on reservation. The chief minister said, "There were no scientific or constitutional reasons behind fixing the maximum limit of reservation, but the supreme court fixed the maximum limit at 50 per cent." The chief minister said that the state government cannot amend the maximum limit of reservation as it comes under the jurisdiction of the Center. The state government can only make recommendations to the central government. When asked about the fate of the caste census report prepared by the karnataka government, Siddaramaiah said, "Apart from the caste census, the recommendations of the remaining part of the report, such as social and educational survey, will be implemented."
