The bihar government on tuesday (June 03, 2025) approved the creation of 390 posts of full-time 'Protection Officers' in all districts and subdivisions to help women affected by domestic violence. This decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Nitish Kumar. The cabinet approved the proposal of the State Social Welfare Department to create 390 posts for this purpose.

Bandana Preyasi, secretary of the social welfare department and chairman-cum-managing director of bihar women and Child Development Corporation (WCDC), told PTI soon after the cabinet decision, "Earlier, the government had approved the creation of a separate cadre to appoint full-time 'protection officers' at the subdivision, district and state levels to more effectively assist women affected by domestic violence. Now, the cabinet has approved the creation of 390 posts under the new cadre and the process of appointment of full-time protection officers will start soon."

State-level protection officer will also be appointed

She said, "Full-time protection officers will be appointed in all 38 districts of the state. A state-level protection officer will also be appointed by the government. This decision has been taken in view of the 'Protection of women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005'. This decision has been taken in view of the increase in cases of domestic violence in the state."

Bandana Preyasi said, "The aim of this move is to ensure effective protection of the rights guaranteed under the Constitution to women victims of any form of violence occurring within the family and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto."

As per the Act, the Protection Officer will assist the Magistrate in discharging his functions and will also be responsible for getting the victim woman medically examined if she has suffered physical injuries and sending a copy of the medical report to the police station and the Magistrate of the area where domestic violence is alleged to have taken place.
