PM Modi inaugurated 184 newly built Type-VII multi-storey flats for MPs on baba Kharak Singh Marg in New Delhi. This complex has been built keeping in mind the needs of MPs. Each flat has an area of 5000 square feet, which also has space for office and staff. The buildings are earthquake resistant as well as adapted for the disabled. This complex has been designed with the aim of making the state self-reliant and the functional needs of the MPs can also be met in it. Which MPs will live in these flats?
The four towers used by the PM are named Krishna, Godavari, Hooghly and Kosi. All four names are named after the great rivers of the country. These rivers give life to crores of people. More than 180 MPs from different states and regions of the country will live together in these flats. These flats are bigger in size than Type-VIII bungalows, which is considered the best category for government housing. There is also a community center in this complex, which will be the center for social and official meetings of MPs.
How do MPs get bungalows?
Union ministers and MPs are allotted accommodation in Lutyens Zone of Delhi. For this, the rules and conditions of the General Pool Residential Accommodation Act are followed. According to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, a department was created in the year 1922, named Directorate of Status. This department takes care of the properties of the central government across the country. It also has the responsibility of taking care of, allocating and vacating the bungalows and flats of ministers and MPs. Similarly, this department as well as the housing committee of lok sabha and rajya sabha play a big role in allocating accommodation to MPs. Accommodation is allotted under the General Pool Residential Accommodation Act.
How do senior MPs get bungalows?
MPs are allotted accommodation on the basis of seniority and category. The smallest Type-I to Type-IV accommodations are given to central employees and officers. After this, bungalows and accommodations from Type-VI to Type-VIII are allotted to Union Ministers, State Ministers and MPs. MPs who are elected for the first time get Type-V bungalows. If an mp is elected more than once, then he is given Type-VI and Type-VII bungalows. Type-VIII bungalows are also allotted to supreme court judges, cabinet ministers, former President, former Vice President, former prime minister and Chairman of the Finance Commission.
