Sukanta Majumdar's Statement on SIR and Political Reactions in Bengal
Sukanta Majumdar’s Comments on SIR:
Union leader Sukanta Majumdar highlighted that the election commission (EC) has confirmed in the supreme court that a nationwide Special Summary Revision (SIR) of voters will be conducted. This process aims to update and verify the voter list.
Opposition to SIR:
Many political parties, including West Bengal’s ruling trinamool congress (TMC), are opposing the SIR. Majumdar acknowledged that protests are part of democracy but criticized the abusive and threatening language used by chief minister mamata banerjee and her party.
Allegations Against mamata Banerjee:
Majumdar questioned why mamata banerjee is so strongly opposing the SIR, implying that her vote bank may consist of fake names, dead voters, transferred voters, or infiltrators.
Threats and Political Tensions:
He claimed that TMC MPs and MLAs have issued threats against him and his party, stating, “I want to see how many bullets the TMC has in Sukanta Majumdar’s chest,” indicating heightened political tensions.
Status of SIR Preparations in Bengal:
The SIR preparations are underway with significant progress:
Booth mapping process deadline extended to october 18th.
Seven districts have completed booth mapping by matching with 2002 SIR data.
These seven districts achieved 100% matching of voter data.
Remaining districts have been directed to complete the process before the diwali holidays.
Voter List Update:
The names of approximately 34.8 million voters in West bengal have been uploaded on the election Commission’s website.
These names were updated based on matching with the 2002 SIR data.
The total number of voters in the state for 2025 is reported to be 76 million.
Overall Context:
The SIR aims to cleanse and verify the electoral rolls to ensure fair and transparent elections, but it has become a politically sensitive issue in bengal due to alleged irregularities and opposition from the ruling party.
