coronavirus has taken the world by a storm killing more than 5,000 people across the globe while taking a toll on multiple economies and global sporting events in the process. The novel Covid-19 virus has affected Formula One, football, rugby and has now also hit cricket hard with the cash-rich pakistan Super League becoming the latest victim of the pandemic.

Starting with the cancellation of south Africa's ODI tour of india, New Zealand's tour of australia (one ODI played without spectators), england tour of sri lanka, and the postponement of indian Premier League (IPL 2020) cricket is grappling with a crisis unheard of in recent times. While all this might still sound novel to many cricket fans, this is definitely not the first time that cricket on a global level has come to a standstill due to factors outside the sport.

Since the start of Test cricket in 1877, there have been 2 instances when cricket globally had to be stopped due to external circumstances. Incidentally, on both occasions, it was not a virus or a pandemic, but World Wars which brought the game to a halt. But it should be noted that first-class cricket in india continued almost without interruption even during the 2 great wars. More than 210 first-class cricketers had joined the ranks of the british army as cricket had to be suspended in england from september 2, 1914. Other countries followed suit with australia, new zealand, south africa and west indies suspending domestic first-class cricket for years on end.
