The game of cricket has been changing itself over time. The rules of fielding, batting and bowling have also been changing. Now there is news that changes in the rules of catching in cricket are possible. After the advent of t20 cricket, many players have been catching the ball after bouncing it from inside the boundary. In fact, in the Big Bash League 2023, Michael Neser took a catch which remained in the discussion for a long time. At the same time, the catches like the one taken by suryakumar yadav in the final of the 2024 t20 world cup can also be said to be the reason for the change in these rules. The new rule made by the Marylebone cricket Club (MCC), the custodian of the cricket rules, will be implemented from june 17, 2025. At the same time, this rule will be included in the MCC rules from october 2026.
If we remember Michael Neser's catch in the 2023 Big Bash League, he first threw the ball in the air while inside the field, after that he jumped in the air across the boundary and pushed the ball inside the field. In this way, he again came inside the boundary and executed the catch. This new rule is to reduce the controversies happening on similar catches.
What is the old rule?
The old rule says that if a fielder goes outside the boundary, he can touch the ball several times while in the air. Mike Neser did something similar in the Big Bash League.
The new rule says that a fielder can touch the ball only once while jumping in the air outside the boundary. If a fielder pushes the ball inside the boundary while in the air, then he will be considered legal only if he comes inside the boundary and catches it.
In the final of the 2024 t20 world cup, David Miller hit an aerial shot, but suryakumar yadav ran inside the boundary and threw the ball in the air. He had crossed the boundary due to loss of balance, but had already thrown the ball in the air. surya then came inside the boundary and completed the catch. According to the new rules, Surya's catch will be considered legal, but catches like Michael Neser will now be considered illegal.
