Corona affecting sperm quality...!? Shocking News..!

Corona Affects Sperms: One of India's top medical institutes, AIIMS conducted a study on about 30 men affected by corona infection. The results of this study on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 corona infection in men's sperm have been published in a medical journal. In it, it has been mentioned that SARS-CoV-2 corona infection can reduce and affect the quality of sperm. A team led by researchers from AIIMS patna noted that the corona infection damages several body organs through the angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 receptor, which is abundant in testicular tissue. However, little information is available on the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection in sperm on spermatogenesis and fertility.
Why this study?

They plan to examine the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the semen of infected men and study the impact of the virus on sperm quality and dna Fragmentation Index. The dna Fragmentation Index reflects the stability and damage of dna, the genetic material of sperm. This allows for the accurate detection of sperm damage.
Study Methodology:
From october 2020 to april 2021, we conducted a survey on 30 male patients with corona infection aged 19-45 years who were treated at AIIMS patna Hospital. The researchers performed RT-PCR testing on sperm samples from all patients. Detailed sperm analysis including sperm dna Fragmentation Index was performed on the first sample taken during the period of corona infection. After 74 days of the first sample, the second sample was obtained and all the above tests were repeated.
Research result:

All semen samples collected in the first and second samples tested by RT-PCR were negative for SARS-CoV-2 infection. In the first sample, the sperm volume, vitality, total motility, sperm concentration, total sperm count, normal morphology (percentage), cytoplasmic drop (percentage), and fructose were significantly reduced, according to the research. In contrast, sperm aggregation, head defect (percentage), dna Fragmentation Index, liquefaction time, sperm viscosity, and leukocytes were increased. These findings were reversed in the second sample. But, they are not in optimal condition. All these findings were statistically significant. Therefore, corona infection negatively affects sperm parameters including the dna Fragmentation Index of sperm.

The solution?

Although SARS-CoV-2 infection could not be detected in the semen, the quality of the semen remained poor until the second sample was taken. Assisted Reproductive technology (ART) hospitals and sperm bank facilities should consider evaluating sperm from men infected with the coronavirus, the researchers said. ART includes all fertility treatments. In which eggs or embryos are handled. The researchers added that the hospital should exclude men with SARS-CoV-2 infection from treatment until their sperm quality returns to normal.
