The bharatiya janata party began to scotch the anticipation over picking candidates for the top position with the announcement of the first-ever tribal chief minister for chhattisgarh, more than a week after the party triumphed in the heartland states in the assembly elections. The party will now make the long-awaited choice on who would be the chief ministers of madhya pradesh and Rajasthan.

Following the pattern in chhattisgarh and recent speculation, the bjp is likely to go for a fresh leadership line in the remaining states. Former rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje and incumbent madhya pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Singh Chouhan, on the other hand, remain strong contestants in the race.

According to persons familiar with the situation, the newly elected madhya pradesh MLAs of the bjp will gather in bhopal on monday to elect the parliamentary party's leader. haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, national secretary Asha Lakra, and rajya sabha MP K Laxman have been named as party observers for Madhya Pradesh. The observers will meet with top state officials and legislators one-on-one. The bjp easily recaptured madhya pradesh, capturing 163 of the 230-member legislature, with the congress a distant second with 66 seats.
