Case Filed Against bjp Leaders and Workers
Tamil Nadu bjp president Nainar Nagendran, senior party leader H. Raja, and 113 others face police cases.
Charges are related to forcibly climbing Tirupparankundram hill to light lamps during a demonstration on december 4, 2025.
Police cited disturbing public peace and other offenses under multiple sections of the indian Penal Code (IPC).
Background of the Incident
The protest aimed to light Karthigai lamps at the top of Tirupparankundram hill, near a shrine.
The madurai Bench of the madras high court had permitted the lighting of lamps and revoked a prohibitory order imposed by the district administration.
Despite the court order, police restricted access to the hill, stating that no one was allowed to climb.
Detention and Protests
When leaders and supporters insisted on climbing, Nagendran, H. Raja, and others were detained for several hours.
They were held in a private hall and released around 11:20 pm on december 4.
Following the arrests, bjp workers protested by blocking roads, which led to the detention of more than 300 workers.
All detained individuals were released later that night.
Police Action
Tirupparankundram police registered a case under seven IPC sections, including:
Disturbing public peace
Damaging public property
Other related charges (not specified)
The action reflects law enforcement’s effort to maintain order despite the court ruling.
Summary
The case highlights a tension between court directives and administrative enforcement.
Senior bjp leaders and workers faced legal action and temporary detention during the demonstration.
Police continue to investigate incidents of public disorder and property damage associated with the event.
