A few weeks after india terminated the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in response to the pahalgam terror assault, china has declared plans to expedite a "flagship" dam project in pakistan in favor of its close ally. media reports say that the Mohmand Hydropower Project in khyber pakhtunkhwa, northwest pakistan, has been under construction since 2019 by the state-owned china Energy Engineering Corporation. Officially starting in september 2019, the project was expected to be finished the following year.
According to the South china Morning Post, China's state broadcaster CCTV announced on saturday that the Mohmand Dam's concrete filling has started, signaling a significant turning point in the project's construction and speeding up Pakistan's flagship hydroelectric project.
This comes just days before Ishaq Dar, China's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, travels to beijing on monday to meet with Wang Yi, the country's senior diplomat. China's action came after india said that the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty would be suspended in the wake of the april 22 terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam.
A multipurpose facility for power generation, flood control, irrigation, and water supply, the Mohmand dam in khyber pakhtunkhwa province is expected to produce 800MW of hydropower and provide 300 million gallons of drinking water per day to Peshawar, the province's capital and largest city.
The Indus Water Treaty grants india the right to use the waters of the eastern Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas rivers, while pakistan is granted access to the waters of the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers. Approximately 80% of Pakistan's drinking and irrigation water comes from its rivers.
