New statistics released by the delhi Office of the japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) highlights a notable increase in the amount and value of indian tourists visiting Japan.  The japan Tourism Agency reports that in 2024, indian tourists spent an average of 241,590 yen (about INR 1.45 lakh) each trip, which is 53.6% more than in 2019.

The remarkable 16.3-night average duration of stay indicates a trend toward more in-depth, engaging travel experiences.  An estimated 56.1 billion yen (INR 3,366 crore) was contributed to the Japanese economy by the 233,000 indian tourists that visited japan in 2024. The JNTO ascribes this to a wider interest in Japanese food, culture, and seasonal experiences, especially among independent tourists, who currently make up 86.9% of indian leisure visitors.

Remarkably, 64.9% of these tourists were making their first trip to japan, and the majority chose the well-known "Golden Route," which passes through Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima.  However, in an effort to encourage decentralized tourism and draw attention to Japan's unique regional diversity, JNTO delhi is focusing more on less-traveled areas.

62,100 indians traveled to japan in Q1 2025 alone, a 24.8% rise from the previous year.  This year, February, which is often a slow month for indian tourists, had a 29% increase in visitors due to curiosity in Japan's winter scenery, particularly the snow-covered Hokkaido.  With 37,300 arrivals, april again set a record, fueled by the cherry blossom season.

Comfort and cultural engagement are preferred, as seen by spending patterns: lodging accounted for 43.2% of expenditures, followed by dining (19.4%), shopping (19.5%), transportation (14.3%), and attractions (3.6%).  Curiosity has been piqued by the india Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, which provides a comprehensive experience of India's technological, cultural, and spiritual tales.
