For Nimisha priya, the indian nurse who is set to be put to death in yemen on Wednesday, July 16, there is still hope. A Yemeni court has sentenced priya, a Keralan nurse, to death for the suspected murder of Talal Abdo Mahdi, her Yemeni business partner.

The sole remaining legal option under Yemeni law to stop Priya's execution is to pardon her, and Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar is rumored to be leading a team to speak with and reassure the victim's family to accept blood money in an attempt to save her.

Who is Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad?

Kanthapuram, officially known as Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, India's tenth and current Grand Mufti, is A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar. In addition, he serves as the general secretary of the Samastha kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama of ap Sunnis and the All india Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama, which is the indian Muslim Scholars Association.

How can the execution of Nimisha priya be stopped?

The Grand Mufti of india, A. P. Abubakar Musliyar of Kanthapuram, and the renowned Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz of yemen are reportedly discussing this matter as part of ongoing discussions between the religious leaders of the two countries.  The deceased's brother and a judge from Yemen's supreme court are also involved in the talks.

Sheikh Habib of yemen agreed to negotiations after being convinced by Mufti Musliyar. Additionally, this is the first occasion that a close relative of the victim has consented to the discussions. It should be mentioned that Sharia law, which grants the victim's family the legal right to pardon the offender unconditionally or in return for blood money, is in effect during the entire conversation.

When was Nimisha priya convicted?

In 2017, Nimisha priya, then 37, was found guilty of killing her Yemeni business partner.  She has been in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, on death row ever since.  Priya's legal team claims that to get her passport back and avoid what she called ongoing torture, she gave Talal Abdo Mahdi sedatives.  However, priya was detained while trying to flee the country, and Mahdi passed away from an overdose.

What does her lawyer say?

Nimisha Priya's attorney, Subhash Chandran, has attested that Mufti Musliyar has contacted the family of the dead Mahdi and is negotiating with Yemeni religious and community authorities in order to find a successful resolution.

According to The New indian Express, Chandran stated, "We are doing everything we can to ensure that the kerala nurse is released from death row and the family accepts the blood money."

According to reports, Mufti Musliyar personally introduced himself to the victim's family members and Yemeni religious leaders who communicated with them.

Executions in yemen are carried out by gunshot to the heart.

The only way to execute someone in yemen is by shooting them.  Though they are not used, the provisions for stoning, hanging, and beheading are also there.  The prisoner is forced to lie face down on a blanket or carpet prior to being shot.

The executioner then uses an automatic weapon to shoot the prisoner in the back after the doctor marks the area of the prisoner's back that contains the heart.  Flogging is sometimes administered as a form of punishment prior to the death penalty.
