Although David Corenswet is the official star of james Gunn's "Superman," Krypto, the Man of Steel's dog (really, a foster dog) is also making an impact in the real world. Dog adoption interest has increased as a result of the movie.

In the film, Krypto, the superdog, who is … ill-trained, helps Superman in battle but also frequently torments him. However, he is loyal and shows himself in combat (don't worry, the pup survives the ordeal). And after seeing him in the movie, people are considering adopting puppies just like him.

Google searches for "adopt a dog near me" increased 513% following the first weekend of "Superman," while more focused searches for "rescue dog adoption near me" increased 163%, according to the dog training app Woofz.

In fact, james Gunn's own rescue dog, Ozu, whom the filmmaker rescued while filming the movie, is the inspiration for Krypto.  According to the account, Gunn was struggling to train the puppy and pondered how much more difficult things would be if Ozu had superpowers. Krypto then entered the narrative.

Woofz found that searches for "adopt a puppy" also rose by 31%, with users even expressly searching for Krypto's breed.  Because Krypto looks to be a cross between a Terrier mongrel and a Schnauzer (he is completely computer-generated, but he is also based on Ozu's body and breed), searches for "adopt a schnauzer" increased by 299%.

"Adoption is a real commitment," Woofz CEO Natalia Shahmetova said in a statement, putting aside celebrations of the spike.  Make sure you're prepared to give your dog the time, attention, and training they require and deserve because even though the excitement may pass, your dog will remain.

Additionally, in preparation for the movie's July 11 premiere, Warner Bros. partnered with Best Friends Animal Society to pay for pet adoption expenses from July 1–10.  Throughout that period, 454 pets were adopted nationwide.
