Chennai:
Marking the observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin announced that the state government has been consistently increasing the budget allocation for the welfare of persons with disabilities every year. He made this statement while speaking at a special empowerment event for persons with disabilities, organised by local bodies in chennai on Wednesday.
During the event, the chief minister distributed various welfare assistance schemes to beneficiaries with disabilities. In addition, he honoured individuals and organisations that have rendered exceptional service toward improving the lives of persons with disabilities across the state.
Addressing the gathering, chief minister stalin emphasized the government’s commitment to creating an inclusive society where persons with disabilities have equal opportunities and access to essential services. He highlighted that the state has adopted several progressive measures to support their socio-economic upliftment.
“We have ensured a 4% reservation in suitable government posts for persons with disabilities,” the chief minister said. He further explained that the government is not only providing employment opportunities within public departments but is also actively promoting job placements in the private sector. To achieve this, employment camps and recruitment drives are being conducted regularly in collaboration with private companies.
Stalin reaffirmed that financial allocations for disability welfare schemes—such as assistive devices, scholarships, rehabilitation support, livelihood assistance, and housing benefits—have seen a steady rise each year under the current administration. These initiatives, he said, reflect the government’s resolve to uphold dignity, independence, and equal rights for persons with disabilities.
The chief minister also highlighted the importance of accessibility in public spaces, improved education support systems, and vocational training programs tailored for individuals with diverse disabilities. Such initiatives aim to help them gain confidence, develop skills, and integrate more effectively into mainstream society.
The event was attended by officials from various government departments, representatives from disability rights organisations, beneficiaries, and local body members. The program concluded with the distribution of awards and certificates recognizing outstanding contributions to disability welfare.
