Chennai: As the Union Budget 2026–27 was being presented in Parliament, Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin raised concerns over delayed or withheld central funds earmarked for the state. In a post on social media platform X, stalin urged the Central government to include meaningful and concrete announcements for tamil Nadu in the budget, even if the general elections are just months away. He stressed that several long‑pending allocations should be finally approved and released.
One of Stalin’s key demands was the release of ₹3,548 crore previously allocated for education funds — money that, according to him, has been held back and not released to the state. He questioned whether this funding, intended to support student studies, would finally be released in the current budget.
Apart from the education funding, stalin also listed other essential requirements for tamil Nadu that he wants addressed in the Union Budget, including:
· Budgetary support for the Coimbatore and madurai Metro rail projects.
· Release of ₹3,112 crore for the Jal jeevan Mission, which tamil Nadu has been implementing effectively.
· Funding for new railway projects and improved infrastructure.
· A larger share of the Union government’s tax revenue to states (50% share) as recommended by the Finance Commission.
Stalin cautioned that past announcements, such as the Madurai AIIMS project, had remained only on paper without proper implementation, and therefore firm budget allocations and timely execution are crucial this time. He expressed hope that the announcements for tamil Nadu would be made without fail despite the election atmosphere, and with real financial commitments rather than mere words.
His appeal underscores the ongoing negotiations between the state and the Centre over central funding releases, especially in sectors such as education and infrastructure, where allocations have either been delayed or contested.
