Veteran Communist stalwart and freedom fighter R. Nallakannu, widely respected across tamil Nadu for his lifelong dedication to social justice and people’s movements, passed away today at the age of 101. In a heartfelt tribute, Chief minister M.K. Stalin honoured him as an “unforgettable giant” whose life and service will continue to inspire future generations.

In an official statement, chief minister M.K. Stalin said Nallakannu’s life should be seen as a guiding light for all who work for justice and equality, noting that “we are proud to have lived during his era.”

He also announced that the veteran leader would be accorded full state honours as a mark of respect by the government of tamil Nadu.

Born in 1925, Nallakannu joined the cpi in the 1940s and remained active in public and political life for more than eight decades, championing the causes of farmers, workers, and the underprivileged until his last days.

Nallakannu’s Legacy of service and Sacrifice

Throughout his life, Nallakannu was known for his sacrifice, simplicity, and steadfast commitment to the welfare of the people. Stories of his personal integrity — including returning award prize money to public relief funds and rejecting personal perks — endeared him to party members and citizens alike.
