Ingredients (makes ~8 doughnuts)
· 1 cup all-purpose flour
· ½ cup sugar
· 1 tsp baking powder
· ½ tsp baking soda
· ¼ tsp salt
· ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)
· ¼ cup buttermilk (or milk + ½ tsp lemon juice)
· ¼ cup plain yogurt
· 1 large egg
· 2 tbsp melted butter or oil
· 1 tsp vanilla extract
· oil for frying (or use an air fryer for a healthier version)
Instructions
1. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
2. Mix wet ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, yogurt, egg, melted butter, and vanilla.
3. Combine: Gradually fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix. The batter should be thick but soft.
4. Shape the doughnuts:
o Frying method: Roll dough out to ~½ inch thickness and use a doughnut cutter or round cutter.
o Air fryer or baked method: Spoon batter into a greased doughnut pan.
5. Cook:
o Frying: Heat oil to 175°C (350°F). Fry doughnuts 1–2 minutes per side until golden. Drain on paper towels.
o Baking: Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
6. Optional topping: Dust with powdered sugar, glaze with chocolate, or coat with cinnamon sugar.
Tips for Perfect Doughnuts
· Don’t overmix the batter; it can make doughnuts tough.
· Use fresh baking powder and soda for proper rise.
· Fry at the correct temperature (175°C / 350°F) so they cook evenly.
· For healthier doughnuts, try baking instead of frying or use an air fryer.
· Add natural flavorings like cardamom, nutmeg, or orange zest for extra aroma.
Health Benefits of Ingredients
· Whole Milk/Buttermilk/Yogurt: Good source of calcium and protein.
· Eggs: Provide high-quality protein and essential vitamins.
· Cinnamon: Helps regulate blood sugar and has antioxidant properties.
· Flour (whole wheat option): Offers fiber and B-vitamins if using whole wheat.
· Moderation: Doughnuts are a treat, so enjoy occasionally, and try baking or using less sugar for a healthier version.
