As per the recently amended cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labeling) Rules, 2008, new warnings and pictures will be displayed on the packaging of tobacco products from december 1.Cigarette packets have two sets of warning messages and images used on both sides of the pack. The warning used in existing advertisements is 'tobacco causes painful death' on one side and 'smokers die young' on the other.The Ministry of health and Family Welfare also said that the cigarette packets will carry the toll-free helpline number 1800-11-2356 in black and white font. Contacting these numbers will create awareness about the harm and diseases caused by cigarette smoking. With this new advertising warning, the government plans to create awareness among smokers and users of other tobacco products. It also seeks to provide tobacco users with access to counseling services to help them quit.According to government data, tobacco use causes more than 1.3 million deaths each year.
