The fact that movies are mocked and the patriotism of their creators is questioned even before they are released is a sad indictment on the contentious times we live in. When the troll army responded to "Laal Singh Chaddha," the old saying, "Don't let conclusions jump on you," has never been more applicable. Weeks before the movie's release, many had already made their own judgements on it, which prompted sane people to speak up, like Vinod Mirani, an IANS journalist, and model and actor Milind Soman, who advised the trolls to first watch the movie before making snap judgments.

It is too soon to judge whether the controversy surrounding "Laal Singh Chaddha" will harm or help it; according to trade analysts, its advance booking numbers have been more than double those of its rival, Akshay Kumar's "Raksha Bandhan." It is, however, without a doubt, a love letter to India. And the historical events and imagery the movie chooses to emphasise should suit those who support the current political system.

It begins with a celebration of the end of the Emergency, depicts the destruction of the golden temple during Operation Blue Star without sugarcoating the truth, and portrays the tragedy that befell the common Sikhs due to the riots started by the Congress' goon brigade in the wake of Indira Gandhi's assassination with heartfelt sincerity.
