The punjab and haryana High court on monday took suo motu cognizance of the incident in which a woman was allegedly beaten up by her son's in-laws and paraded in a semi-nude state in Tarn Taran. The court said that this incident reminded of the 'dismemberment of Draupadi' at the behest of Kauravas in Mahabharata.

In Tarn Taran district, a 55-year-old woman was allegedly beaten up by her son's in-laws and paraded semi-nude. The son of the victim woman had eloped with a girl and married her without the consent of the girl's family. police said the incident took place in a village on march 31, a few days after the victim's son went missing with a girl and married her.

‘Remembered that historical incident that happened during the Mahabharata period’

Justice Sanjay Vashisht took suo motu cognizance of this “barbaric and shameful incident” through media reports and decided to hear the matter as a PIL. Justice Vashishtha said, "I am reminded of the historical incident that occurred during the Mahabharata period when Draupadi was dismembered on the orders of the Kauravas and the silence of the Pandavas including Bhishma Pitamah ultimately resulted in the bloodshed of thousands of people in the Mahabharata." Said, "After centuries, even an ordinary common man today does not expect that the 'justice system' will remain a mute spectator to such incidents happening right under the nose of the administration."

4 people arrested in the case

Police said that four people have been arrested in connection with this incident. According to the complaint lodged by the victim, she was alone at home when her son's in-laws allegedly beat her and tore her clothes. She alleged that the accused paraded her in the village in a semi-nude state. A video of this incident surfaced on social media on Friday.
