What happened on 26 June 2025 in Cumilla district of bangladesh shook the entire humanity. A 21-year-old Hindu woman was raped by her local leader. The woman's husband works abroad, so she was living in her ancestral home with her children. The horror of this painful incident increased further when the video of the woman went viral on social media, in which she was naked, being beaten badly and pleading to the people.
The main accused 36-year-old Fazor ali is a local political leader of Cumilla district. Police have arrested him from Saidabad area of Dhaka. Apart from this, four other people have also been arrested, who had posted the identity and video of the victim on social media. However, the inaction of the police in this case is also under question. According to media reports, when the accused was caught and beaten by locals, he was taken to a hospital instead of being handed over to the police, from where he escaped. The police action started after the video went viral and sparked outrage across the country.
Violent student protests
The most intense reaction came from Dhaka University students. Students from Jagannath Hall, a hostel for predominantly minority students, took out a march demanding justice. A forum called “Students Against Discrimination” organized the protest and demanded direct action from the government. The rising cases of violence against minorities have shocked not only students but the entire society. The march echoed with slogans like 'Give justice or leave power'.
Judiciary and political response
The bangladesh High court ordered authorities to remove the viral video from all social media platforms and provide immediate protection and treatment to the victim. BNP General Secretary mirza Fakhrul islam Alamgir demanded strict action against the culprits, while Sajeeb Wazed, son of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, blamed the Yunus administration for the increased violence in the last 11 months.
