The Global Affairs Team of social media platform X issued an official statement claiming that on July 3, 2025, the government of india had ordered X to block 2,355 accounts in india, including two X accounts of international news agency Reuters @Reuters and @ReutersWorld.

'Accounts were asked to be blocked within an hour'

According to X's Global Affairs Team, the indian government had issued the order to block Reuters' account under Section 69A of the Information technology Act of india and there was a threat of punishment for not complying with it. According to X, the IT Ministry of the government of india had demanded to block these accounts within an hour and that too without any concrete reason or formal explanation.

'India requested to unblock after protest'

The case of blocking Reuters's X accounts is also interesting because after this, many media reports claimed that the indian government had not blocked Reuters' X account and the blocking was due to some technical problem. The Global Affairs team also said that after public protest, the indian government requested X to unblock both the accounts of global news agency Reuters @Reuters and @ReutersWorld, after which X again unblocked them in India.

X advised indian users to go to court

X's Global Affairs team wrote that it is concerned about such blocking orders affecting the freedom of press in india and is exploring all legal options. X has also appealed to users living in india against whom blocking orders have been issued to take judicial action against these blocking orders and approach the court to protect their constitutional rights.
