Chief Justice bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, while hearing a divorce case on tuesday (July 22, 2025), reprimanded the woman. On demanding Rs 12 crore alimony, the court told the woman that despite being so educated, it is wrong to ask for so much money from the husband, rather one should work on their own. The CJI clearly told the woman that she will either get a house or Rs 4 crore and find a job to live on.
According to the Bar and Bench report, CJI Gavai said that the woman has been married for only 18 months and she is demanding a bmw, Rs 12 crore and a house in Mumbai. CJI Gavai told the woman that you are an IT person and you have also done MBA. There is a lot of demand for IT persons in cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad, so why don't you work there too.
On this, the woman said, 'But my husband is a rich man and he has declared me as suffering from schizophrenia to end the marriage. Do you think I am suffering from this disease?' CJI Gavai told the woman that but you cannot claim the property of your husband's father.
Senior advocate madhavi Divan, who appeared for the husband, said that a woman should also work, she cannot make such demands for everything. madhavi Divan said that apart from the house, the woman also has two car parkings, she can earn from them too. She also told that the bmw the woman is dreaming of is 10 years old and is lying in junk.
During the hearing, the woman alleged that her husband has influenced her lawyer. CJI Gavai bluntly told the woman either be satisfied with a house or take Rs 4 crore and find a job. CJI Gavai made an important comment in the case and said, 'You are so educated. You should not beg for yourself, but earn and eat for yourself.' On the supreme Court's order, the woman said that her husband has made many allegations against her and FIRs have also been filed against him. In such a situation, what kind of job will I get? CJI B R Gavai then said that we dismiss all the complaints.
