Kerala SIR Controversy: BLOs to Boycott Work After Officer’s Death
Boycott Announcement
Several employee and teacher organizations in kerala have announced that Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) will boycott all duties on november 17.
The protest follows the tragic death of a BLO in Kannur, which organizations allege resulted from immense work pressure.
Groups leading the boycott include:
State government Employees and teachers Action Council
Joint Committee of Teachers’ service Organizations
Kerala NGO Federation
Joint marches will be held at the Chief Electoral Officer’s office and Collectorates across all districts.

Allegations Against the SIR Process
Organizations claim BLOs are facing excessive workload due to:
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Preparations for the upcoming local body elections.
All major political parties and employee unions reportedly demanded postponing the SIR, but the election commission refused.
BLOs have been assigned “impractical and excessive targets” within a short period.
Representatives warn that this burden is pushing officials to extreme stress and suicidal tendencies.
Kerala NGO Federation’s Stand
The kerala NGO Federation announced additional marches to the CEO's office and district collectorates.
Federation leaders argue that BLOs are being forced to work day and night to revise the 23-year-old voter list, without sufficient time or manpower.
They warn that if authorities fail to provide a quick and effective solution, the agitation will intensify.
Death of BLO Anish George
In Payyanur, Kannur, BLO Anish George (44) was found hanging at home on Sunday.
Family members and locals allege that his death was caused by work pressure from SIR duties.
Political Response
V.D. Satheesan, leader of the Opposition, demanded a thorough investigation into George’s death.
He stated that BLOs are severely overburdened and the SIR, initiated by the central government, is more demanding than assembly election preparations.
