Salem: Rise in Water Inflow to Mettur Dam
The water inflow to the mettur dam has recorded a slight increase. According to the latest reports, the inflow has risen from 392 cubic feet per second (cusecs) to 417 cusecs over the past few hours.
Officials are continuously monitoring the water level and inflow situation at the dam, which is considered one of the major reservoirs in tamil Nadu and plays a crucial role in supplying water for irrigation and drinking purposes.
Water Released for Drinking Water Requirements
At present, 1,000 cusecs of water is being released from the dam primarily to meet the drinking water requirements of several districts that depend on the reservoir.
The release of water is being carefully regulated by the Public Works Department (PWD) to ensure adequate supply while also maintaining the reservoir’s storage levels during the ongoing season.
Current Importance of Mettur Dam
The mettur dam, built across the River Cauvery, is a vital water source for agriculture, industries, and households in many parts of the state. Any increase in inflow is closely watched by farmers and officials, especially during periods of low rainfall.
Although the increase in inflow is marginal, it brings some relief amid concerns over water availability in the region.
Officials Continue Monitoring
Water Resources Department officials stated that the inflow and storage levels are being monitored regularly. Further decisions regarding water release for irrigation and other purposes will depend on rainfall in the Cauvery catchment areas and future inflow into the reservoir.
