Matthew Hayden's mongoose bat had garnered a lot of attention when the former Australian opener launched it during IPL 2010. Hayden had unleashed havoc with his new bat against delhi Daredevils, however, the idea of using a bat with a longer handle and shorter blade was treated with skepticism at first. Using his small bat, Hayden smacked 93 off 43 to almost single-handedly chase down delhi Daredevils' 185.

Talking to Rupha Ramani on the chennai Super Kings instagram page, Hayden revealed that skipper ms dhoni had asked him to not use that bat. Hayden said during the live session “I’ll (Dhoni) give you anything you want in life, to not use this bat! Please do not use this bat". “I’ve been using this bat for practice for about a year and a half and when it hits the middle of the bat it goes 20 metres further,” the left-handed batsman further said in the video. “I wasn’t going to put my franchise on risk by performing badly because of the bat. I had done my homework.”

“It was a courageous decision to use it and believed it was going to make my game better. On a couple of occasions, I used it, I loved it, it was fun,” Hayden said Recently, Hayden's former CSK teammate suresh raina termed the Australian great's 93-run knock against delhi Capitals (then delhi Daredevils) as his favourite innings of the tournament.Mongoose bat features long handle with the less striking surface which allows batsmen to optimize the maximum power of the bottom-hand.Raina who was performing the duties of the skipper also played an unbeaten knock of 49 runs and built a 78-run partnership with Hayden.
