World number one Magnus Carlsen once again proved that he is the best in the world by winning the Super United Rapid and Blitz chess tournament with one round remaining, while current world champion D Gukesh finished third.
After trailing Gukesh by four points in the nine-round rapid tournament, Carlsen took full advantage of it in the Blitz category and scored 7.5 points out of nine in the first stage. Scoring four points out of the first eight games in the second stage was enough to give him another win in the tournament.
Gukesh had made a great start in the rapid category, scoring 14 points, but lost his rhythm by scoring only 1.5 points out of his first nine games in the Blitz category. Carlsen finished the tournament with 22.5 points, 2.5 points ahead of Wesley So of the US, who finished second.
Gukesh eventually finished third with 19.5 points. Carlsen took home USD 40,000 from the USD 17,5000 prize pool, Wesley 30,000, and Gukesh 25,000. India's R Praggnanandhaa finished ninth with 15 points.
