After Ratheesh balakrishna Podhuval's promising start Android Kunjappan, which was released over two years ago, there were high anticipation when he revealed his sophomore filmmaking outing, starring Nivin Pauly. Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham, which is currently streaming on Hotstar, expands on a filmmaker's geeky yet zippy sensibilities, which are bursting with a flair for extracting sense of humor from the most mundane of transactions that we see all around us, in the hidden corridors of public spaces and the uncomfortable silences echoing in male-dominated narratives.

Pavithran (Nivin Pauly) is a younger actor in movies who fails to land any significant roles due to a lack of genuine talent, and his girlfriend Haripriya (Grace Anthony), an ex-"serial performer" forced into a life away from the spotlight, who is looking to mend fences with her emotionally unavailable husband, find themselves in a pickle when the story's MacGuffin – a newly gifted earring, a symbol of truce in the troubled waters.

An assortment of crazy, unique personalities live the much-respected hotel, which once housed legendary cinema stars, a detail that allows the director to infuse the film with a reverent gaze, complete with movie posters and references galore. With its delightfully clever storytelling and character choices, Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham goes beyond the bounds of a typical honeymoon comedy. The travelling couple is in a bit of a pickle over a misplaced earring, which sets in motion a haywire storey that unearths old secrets, disclosures, and mudslinging within the boundaries of the hotel lobby.

The camera seamlessly shifts from close-ups of ferocious rants to broad shots, capturing the ensuing turmoil with the help of physical comedy, including abuse and punches thrown at each other. In a character that requires him to be flimsy and caricaturist in all the appropriate places, Nivin Pauly is powered up and pitch-perfect, proving once again that he is the most adept at physical humor among the younger generation of malayalam performers.

This is a film made to provide a lighthearted laugh in the midst of all the bad news that surrounds us.
