Rumors were circulating in 2019 that South indian actor Keerthy suresh, who plays ajay devgn in Maidaan, will make his bollywood debut. She soon chose not to, though. She appeared "too young" for the role, according to an Open Magazine article, but producer Boney Kapoor and she decided as a team. Later, her staff emphasized that they were arranging her dates, suggesting that her hectic schedule may be the cause of her departure.
Priya Mani raj was eventually selected to play Devgn's wife in the movie. All rumors are dispelled as director Amit Ravidernath Sharma discusses for the first time what caused suresh to be replaced in Maidaan.

He tells us, "Yes, that was the plan," acknowledging that the actor who played mahanati and dasara was the initial option. However, Keerthy suresh was much thinner. I wanted the wife of late football coach Syed Abdul Rahim (played by ajay in the movie) to have a specific appearance. However, I thought she wasn't the proper match for the character once she dropped weight. At that point, we realized someone else would be a better fit for the role.

Separately, Maidaan is the second project that Sharma and Kapoor have worked on together since the latter's 2015 debut film Tevar, which featured arjun kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha. The seasoned producer also gave Maidaan the Rahim narrative, which moved Sharma to tears.

"Boney ji wanted me to meet him and called me for a story." I learned about Syed Abdul Rahim from him. I was unaware of him. His name was unfamiliar to me. I don't play football, therefore I don't know a lot about the game. I prefer playing cricket. Nevertheless, when I heard Mr. Rahim's tale, I started crying. I came to realize that it doesn't matter if I understand football or not; it's a man's narrative that has to be told," he says.
