They have stepped up research into whether it could be a place for humans to stay on the moon. Scientists have discovered an underground cave on the moon, which could be a prime location for a future lunar base. Scientists have confirmed the existence of a cave on the moon for the first time and believe that there may be hundreds of underground caves on the moon. These caves give hope that they could be a safe place for astronauts from Earth to stay in the future.The cave was found to be accessible from a crater in the Mare Tranquillitatis area. The cave, accessible from the surface of the moon, is believed to be a prime location for building a lunar base. Since the lunar environment would be too harsh for human habitation, the cave is highly likely to serve as a natural shelter for astronauts from Earth. Scientist Leonardo Carrer leads the team involved in this research. According to him, these caves are more likely to be structural areas for human habitation without complex construction activities.
The new research was recently published in the journal Nature Astronomy. This landmark discovery of the lunar explorations was published in the journal Nature Science under the name of 'Radar evidence of an accessible cave conduit on the moon below the Mare Tranquillitatis pit'. The study, published yesterday (Monday, July 15, 2024), provides the first evidence of the presence of caves on the Moon's interior. Researchers suspect that this cave structure may be an empty lava tube. The Italian Space Agency has also provided funding to carry out this study. Researchers from the university of Padua and La Venta Geological survey APS are also involved in the study. The researchers have carried out work related to geological analysis and modeling of the identified route. The deepest crater on the moon is Mare Tranquilitatis, which is 80 meters long and 45 meters wide. Analysis of radar data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) shows that the crater leads to a lunar cave. The cave is about 150 meters below the surface.

The caves have been theorized for more than 50 years, but this is the first time their existence has been proven, said professor Lorenzo Brussone of the university of Trento. In 2010, as part of the LRO nasa mission, the Miniature Radio-Frequency (Mini-RF) instrument imaged the Mare Tranquilitatis crater. Years later, radar reflections from the crater were detected when researchers reanalyzed this data with recently developed sophisticated signal processing techniques. In it, the route to the underground cave of the moon is well illustrated," says Lorenzo Brussone.
