In relation to the phony delayed birth or death certificates that were issued in different districts of Maharashtra, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out raids at many sites in Malegaon on Friday, according to officials.

The results of the searches showed that 3,127 delayed birth certificates were issued between august 2023 and december 2024, suggesting a potential widespread fraud involving beneficiaries, agents, and document forgers.

The action arose from a case in which the accused received fake or tampered documents, including ration cards, aadhar cards, transfer certificates, and school-leaving certificates, among others.

The majority of the FIRs in this case were filed in response to written complaints from several tehsildars, who claimed that the applicants utilized a variety of documents with forged credentials to obtain a delayed birth certificate.

The complaint claims that several people applied for several birth certificates with various details, demonstrating a concerted attempt to get around the established verification processes for this purpose.

Some applicants even succeeded in obtaining the appropriate authorities' seals or signatures, which were subsequently discovered to be fake. By providing certificates from educational institutions that either did not exist or had no records of the applicant, some applicants also tried to tamper with the system.

Applicants for delayed birth certificates often weren't even citizens of the state they were applying for.

A complex network was in operation for the issuance of these certificates, according to the findings of the investigation thus far.

HOW THEY OPERATED
It was discovered during the ED inquiry that the relevant municipal office had failed to issue the necessary paperwork needed to issue delayed birth or death certificates.  However, in order to process their petitions in this regard, the Tehsil office received phony certificates signed by government officials.

The applicants listed as accused in this FIR submitted fake identification documents and faked required government documents to obtain birth certificates.
