There is political turmoil in bangladesh these days. Amid the discussion of the resignation of interim chief Mohammad Yunus, an emergency meeting was held with the advisors, after which it was said that Yunus would remain in office. Earlier there was talk that he might resign due to political and military pressure.
Planning Advisor Wahiduddin Mahmud said on saturday (May 24, 2025), "Muhammad Yunus has not shown any interest in leaving his post. The Chief Advisor will remain with us. He did not say that he would resign and similarly all the other advisors will continue their work. We are here because of the responsibilities assigned to us."
Mohammad Yunus had called the meeting
Earlier, the head of the interim government of bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, on Saturday called a meeting of the Advisory Council to review the growing discomfort between his administration, political parties and the army. Hours earlier, Yunus had expressed his desire to step down from the post of chief adviser, citing difficulties in working due to lack of consensus among political parties on the change.
News agency UNB quoted sources as saying that Yunus will hold a meeting with advisers (in fact ministers) "immediately after the ongoing ECNEC (Executive Committee of National Economic Council) meeting." Yunus is expected to meet the advisers on saturday ahead of back-to-back meetings with former prime minister Khaleda Zia's bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami. According to the chief adviser's press wing, the BNP delegation will meet the chief adviser at 7 pm, while Jamaat-e-Islami leaders will meet at 8 pm.
Mohammad Yunus has expressed his desire to resign
Yunus told the leaders of the student-led National Citizen party (NCP) on thursday night that he was considering resigning because he felt that 'the situation is such that he cannot work.' Earlier in the day, he had reportedly expressed his desire to resign in a cabinet meeting.
