The street was renamed to honor 2nd december 1971, the date on which the United Arab Emirates was founded (when the emirates unified).
This change was made in 2011, by order of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to mark the 40th anniversary of the UAE’s National Day.
Historical Importance of the Road
The road (previously called Al Diyafah Street) connects to Union House (Dar Al Ittihad), which is a very symbolic site — it’s where the declaration of the uae federation was signed on december 2, 1971.
