Senior leader of the Communist party of India (CPI), R. Nallakannu, passed away on Wednesday, february 25, 2026 at the age of 101 at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai. He had been undergoing treatment for age‑related health complications and multiple ailments, including hypertension and kidney issues, and was admitted to intensive care earlier in the month. Despite specialised medical care, his condition worsened and he died in the afternoon.
Nallakannu was a towering figure in tamil Nadu’s Left movement and a lifelong advocate for workers’ rights, agrarian reforms, and social welfare. Born on December 26, 1925 in Tiruvaikuntam, tirunelveli district, he joined the cpi in the mid‑1940s and spent nearly eight decades in public life. Known for his integrity and selfless service, he remained rooted in grassroots struggles throughout his life.
📜 A Legacy of Struggle, Selflessness and Service
Nallakannu’s political journey was marked by unwavering commitment to social justice and the rights of the working class. Over the years, he served in numerous leadership roles within the Communist party, including as State Secretary of the CPI’s tamil Nadu unit. He was respected for his moral conduct and simple lifestyle — famously returning personal gifts and money to the people, insisting that they belonged to the masses rather than to him.
Even well into his later years, Nallakannu remained a symbol of principled politics and grassroots activism, attending party events and public functions whenever his health permitted. His passing marks the end of an era in tamil Nadu’s political history.

Kanimozhi praised Nallakannu’s steadfast commitment to the cause of the labour class and acknowledged his role in strengthening democratic values and people‑centred politics throughout his long life.
📌 Final Farewell and Recognition
Political leaders across party lines, including senior figures and social activists, have expressed their condolences on the veteran leader’s demise. Many acknowledged Nallakannu’s contribution to public life and noted that his integrity and lifelong service would continue to inspire future generations of leaders and activists.
