A healthy, tangy South indian sambar made with cabbage and lentils

2 cups chopped cabbage (muttaikose)


1 medium tomato, chopped


1-2 green chilies, slit


half teaspoon turmeric powder


1 tablespoon tamarind paste (or lemon juice as substitute)


Salt to taste


3 cups water


For sambar powder:


2 tablespoons sambar powder (save-offered or selfmade)


For tempering:


1 tablespoon oil or ghee


1 teaspoon mustard seeds


1 teaspoon cumin seeds


1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds (optional)


1 dried purple chili


A pinch of asafoetida


a few curry leaves
