Abhignana Shaakuntalam by Kalidasa was adapted into Shaakuntalam. gunasekhar attempts to commercialise the epic love story between Shakuntala (Samantha) and Dushyant (Dev Mohan) by adding a few action scenes that emphasise minor aspects found in the books. The narrative covers from Shaakuntala's journey to Kanva Maharshi's ashram, Dushyant's love for her, Gandharva's marriage, and the drama that ensues, to its happy conclusion with their reunion.

Shakuntala and Dushyant are the two primary characters of Shaakuntalam. Shakuntala is Samantha. Her selection for the part was a brave one. In Abignana Shaakuntalam, Shakuntalam has two shades: Srungara Shakuntala and Atmabhimana Shakuntala. In the second part, samantha did a good job. But Srungara Shakuntala was hindered by her appearance and demeanour.

The credibility of the character was damaged since we got to see samantha as we are used to seeing her in those scenes. She didn't look feminine or well-built like Srungara Shakuntala Kalidasa said; rather, she had a manly appearance. Her voice was used in an attempt to create that impact, but it was unsuccessful. Without a question, it isn't the memorable outing samantha hoped for given its duration and extensive absence.
