Recent years have seen a downturn in Indo-Nepal relations...

Although india and nepal have traditionally been regarded as "two countries, one family," there has been a breach in their relationship during the past few years. This relationship deteriorated, particularly in 2015, as a result of the violence surrounding the Madhesi problem in Nepal.

Madhesis in the Terai region of nepal, which is bordered by india, have 'Roti-Beti' connections with bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Because of this, some Nepalese leaders attempted to pin the violence on India. Since then, Nepal's domestic politics have made use of india as a "punching bag."

Mutual relations worsened during KP Sharma's time

Following KP Sharma Oli's election as prime minister of nepal in 2018, the nations' relations deteriorated and disagreements grew. KP Sharma made it plain that he had a preference for China, and it was well known that he had a close relationship with the Chinese ambassador to Nepal. During this time, nepal claimed Limpiyadhura, Kalapani, and Lipulekh as its own and accused india of illegitimately possessing them. Even when China's People's Liberation army instigated combat in eastern Ladakh, KP Sharma did not hesitate to stir up controversy.
