In the Kudankulam nuclear reactor controversy, mp TR Balu asked prime minister Narendra Modi if there was any other site other than tamil Nadu to bury nuclear waste and whether the central government would accept the supreme court judgement. The second and third reactors at the Kudankulam nuclear power station are currently being built.

In light of this, the central government of india Atomic Energy Corporation has chosen to establish a storage facility for radioactive waste on the nuclear power plant grounds, but outside the reactor, to store waste created at the plant. On July 23, 2021, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board approved permission for this. Regarding this, mp Balu said,

"You are aware that on July 23, 2021, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERC) granted the Atomic Energy Corporation of india the requisite approval to construct a waste storage facility for the third and fourth reactors at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. The project is still awaiting environmental approval. Waste disposal on a nuclear power plant's grounds poses a major long-term threat to human health and the environment. The indian government and the Atomic Energy Corporation are required to investigate the potential effects. The nuclear waste should be sent back to russia and TN should not a dumping ground."
