Last year, the northeast monsoon completely failed in Thoothukudi district. Similarly, this year the South West Monsoon has not given up. This has resulted in severe drought in the last several years. There is not enough water in the dams. Ponds have also dried up. It has been scorching hot for the last 2 months. Agriculture has become a question mark. Even cattle suffer from lack of water.

Thousands of coconut and palm trees are burning in areas such as Ebengudi, Satankulam, Tiruchendur, Thoothukudi etc. Farmers shed tears to see even palm trees that can withstand severe drought withering. They are fighting to do their best to save the trees. Regarding this, Tuticorin district Environment Protection Movement Coordinator Ve.Kunaseelan told 'Hindu tamil Vekti' newspaper that: Palm trees can withstand severe drought. If these trees are burning, it is because the ground water has been overexploited.

Proper measures are not taken to properly store the water that is wasted in the sea during rainy season in the ponds. Udengudi and Satankulam areas look like a desert. Some areas have limited groundwater. But, it is brackish water. Due to over-exploitation of ground water, sea water intrusion has turned the ground water into brackish water.
