But the new proposed bill says that if the Prime minister, any Union minister, any chief minister or a minister of any state or union territory is arrested and remains in custody for 30 consecutive days, then they will have to resign on the 31st day or will be considered removed from the post automatically.
The official said that home minister amit shah will introduce three draft bills in the lok sabha on wednesday (August 20). These bills are - Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, Governance of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill and kashmir - SRINAGAR/JAMMU' target='_blank' title='jammu and kashmir-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>jammu and kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill. Shah will also propose to send these three bills to the Joint Committee of lok sabha and Rajya Sabha, which will have a provision to submit a report on the first day of the last week of the next parliamentary session.
Sharp reaction from Congress
As soon as this news came at midnight, a debate broke out on social media. Senior congress leader and well-known supreme court lawyer abhishek Manu Singhvi reacted sharply.
He wrote on X, "What a vicious circle! No guidelines were followed for arrests! Arrests of opposition leaders are happening indiscriminately and inconsistently. Under the new proposed law, the current chief minister etc. will be removed immediately after arrest."
He further said, "The easiest way to destabilize the opposition is to leave biased central agencies to arrest opposition chief ministers and despite failing to defeat them in the electoral field, remove them through arbitrary arrests!! And no current chief minister of the ruling party is ever touched!!"
