Decision to Resume Matches

Karnataka deputy chief minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that cricket matches will resume at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The government has approved this decision with an emphasis on stronger safety protocols.

The move comes after concerns over the stadium’s readiness following past safety lapses.

Reasons Behind the Decision

Shivakumar stated that the decision aims to protect Bengaluru’s reputation as a major sporting hub.

Ensuring that no untoward incidents occur during future matches remains a top priority.

The government aims to restore normalcy and confidence among fans and stakeholders.

Safety Measures & Oversight

Home minister G. Parameshwara has been assigned to oversee all safety and security arrangements.

A coordinated meeting involving the home minister, KSCA President venkatesh Prasad, and senior police officials will finalise operational details.

The home Department has been instructed to implement recommendations from the Michael De Cunha report, focusing on enhanced security and crowd management.

KSCA will collaborate closely with the home Department to adopt all required safety upgrades.

Cabinet Decision & Match Schedule

The karnataka cabinet’s meeting in Belagavi approved holding all upcoming matches, including the 2026 IPL season, at the stadium.

The return of matches marks the end of a suspension period following the june 4 stampede that claimed 11 lives.

The stadium had missed hosting a women’s world cup match earlier due to security concerns.

Background: Stampede Incident

Matches were halted after an RCB victory celebration in July led to overcrowding and a fatal stampede.

Since then, no cricket matches have been held at Chinnaswamypending security assessments.

Political Clarifications

Shivakumar also addressed speculation about a dinner meeting he attended, clarifying that such meals are informal gestures from locals and party members.

He emphasised that such invitations are routine and not politically motivated.
